Internet Cable Speed

Why is my cable internet speed spastic?

I have the 6MB cable internet package but recently its been crappy. When I test it with the Speakeasy Speed Test ( http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ), the needle on the meter goes up then down, up then down, up then down-like someone revving a car motor. It used to just fly right up to almost 6MB & hold steady but now it's like I said... Most of the time when I start the test, it shoots up to 6MB but then it plummets down to about 3MB then revs up to 3.5, then drops to about 2.5, then revs up to 3MB, then drops to 2MB and revs up to 2.5MB, etc........... Whats up and how do I fix it? Thanx!

1. Could be one (or more) of your neighbors has cable internet as well. Thats the downside about cable internet, you have to share the same line with people in your neighborhood.
