Cable internet speed problem?
I have cable internet and I used to test my speed at about 5500 kbps plus consistently, but over the past few days it's been much, much slower (and spastic). I can test it 3 times and I'll get 800 kbps the 1st time, 4000 kbps the 2nd and 1400 the 3rd time. What can cause this? I test it with NOTHING else running. Please advise-thanx! And sometimes I have to stop & reload pages to get them to move at all....

- This is a typical complaint for cable modems. The problem is that the cable is shared by everyone in the area that has cable modem service. This might be two people or two hundred or more. While the top speed might be higher (wider road), the fact that you're sharing bandwidth with lots of people (more at some times during the day) can kill your overall bandwidth. Get on your cable provider's case. Get them to live up to their promises. Sometimes they can route your connection to a loop without so much traffic--but don't count on it.
- unplug the power to your modem and router to reset them
- Your neighbors are home for Christmas holidays, wait till they go back to work, and it will be back to normal
- Under XP you can gain back 20% of your bandwidth. Run TCP Optimizer from http://www.speedguide.net Get a better faster router that has non-blocking ports Just to let you know if you start to see speeds go up and down, you might have a bad modem they do go bad. Once a month reset the modem power off and power on Same with the Router, use a router that allows you to change the WAN port speed from 10 to 100 or 10000. I use it 100. There are so many tweak programs for TCP/LAN but you need to start with the source your cable modem. Check the coax coming it and make sure it's 18AWG and it should be they same type use for HDTV 2.3GHz. As most cable TV uses 900 to 1000GHz. Also keep the coax from AC power and also ethernet cable. You want to cut down on interference also.
