Internet Cable Speed

Internet slow over WiFi, despite fast connection speed...???

I just got high-speed comcast cable internet and hooked up a cheap belkin wireless-g router to it. The setup wizard ran into a problem at some poitn when trying to configure the router and gave me the error "The set could not be created". I could not find a description of the error or continue. I did the rest of the setup manually, and everything is working, except I have one peculiar problem: the internet is extremely slow. I know my connection speed is fast because I can download at high speeds, and speed tests show my speed at very good cable speeds, but web pages load at dial-up paces. When I plug in directly to the router, web pages load in a flash. I'm sure there's some setting I just need to change to make wireless web access full-speed again, but I'm not sure what. Anyone have any ideas?

  1. hook it up yo your pay t.v aus star or whatever it is run it of the dish that u use for pay t.v and get broadband adsl 2
  2. That means someone's using your WiFi to download some large files. It's not uncommon for people to steal open WiFi and use it. Get a technician to secure it with a password or something.
  3. Use the scan feature on the computer's wireless setup and see if the channel set on the router is the same as other nearby wireless access points. Try changing the channel to different ones to see if you have other interference issues going on. Cordless phones are known to create issues since they are in the same bands as wireless. Where do you physically have the router placed? A mass of electrical cords will create a big magnetic field that can royally mess up reception. I would make sure the router is placed as high up as you can manage to about halfway up the wall. What is the reception strength on your computer? Is the problem the same no matter where your computer is located? Do you have security turned on for the wireless? Make sure it is set with a strong passphrase so that your neighbors aren't sopping up your bandwidth. You may also want to try a different router, perhaps even a different brand. You didn't mention what the router model is. The link I provided below describes one model as having a slow wireless link that was unstable. Good luck!
  4. Since an error occurred during the first install, it may be an idea to plug in a lan cable to the router in and disable your wireless temporarily. Then do a router reset. Uninstall any software loaded by the router disk and any software relating to the modem, as this often causes problems. Use the web based interface to manually configure it again from scratch, including changing the ssid. Test the connection using the cable, then enable and test your connection of your wireless without encryption by searching for your network and connecting. While doing so note the channels of nearby systems and change yours to be as far as possible from any with reasonanble signal strength. If this test works and you can browse faster, try setting encryption. If this slows it down, change the type of encryption, some wireless cards work better under WEP, others prefer WPA. This way you have a clean install, so you know the settings are optimal and not corrupted. If you still have a problem, check your internet options in tools on IE, particularly under connections, set never dial a connection and in advanced turn off ALL the check boxes.
