Would a 20m ethernet cable reduce internet speed?
Hi, I've just bought a 20m ethernet cable from ebay. I've tested it on my brothers pc but i have to wait for mine to return from the engineers. It seems to work fine but i was worried that a 20m cable would drastically reduce the connection speed. Is that the case? Thanks

- No; the recommended maximum length for Ethernet CAT5 cables is 100 meters. Exceding 100 meters will result in packet losses and an apparent slower speed; many indicate lengths of over 150 meters without problems but the recommended max is 100 meters.
- NO! IT IS DIGITAL! You can run UTP CAT5e for 100 meters before you need a repeater.
- It depends. If you connect it directly to a switch then the answer is NO. If you connect to a wall plate that is 100m from the switch then it could be a yes. The max length for cat5 is 100m.
- no it won't affect internet speed at that length. using a utp-cat5e cable, maximum is 150 meters. yours is just 20m. http://www.querycat.com/faq/d163883fa6a9de681b4b3896b1ad98e6
- No, the maximum length of a CAT 5e cable (ethernet) is 100 meters (about 330 feet). If you are connecting directly to a switch, then you will have not problem. If you are plugging your cable into the wall (which, if it is for home use, I doubt you will do ( you might thought)) you'll have to check to see how long the cable is. Any cable tester that can be connected to both ends will tell you how long it is. Data degration only occurs after the first 100m. Anything after that will need a repeter. Good Luck!
