Internet Cable Speed

why does my cable internet download so slow?

i tested my cable internet speed on speakeasy.com and im getting 14+mbps download speed. so why is it that when i download files, the max ive ever gotten was 1.5mbps. i usually get around 700kbps. even less on limewire, sometimes down to 5kbps or so.

  1. because your computer is full with stuff
  2. Clean it up with ccleaner. Google it.
  3. to much memory on your hardrive take unwanted stuf of and make sure the server is runing ok
  4. My guess is that you used up all your bandwith
  5. Because not all connections are able to send you information that fast. You're download speed is how fast you can receive info but there is also the upload speed which is how fast a website or server is able to send you info. If you're being uploaded information slowly than it won't matter if you're download speed is 9,999 mbps because you will be limited to the websites upload speed. It could also be junk on your computer and messed up settings but most likely it's just a slow upload on the website's/server's end and there is nothing that can be done about that.
  6. Holy crap only14 mbps?! I think i topped out about 700mbps when i downloaded windows 7.. or maybe i dont know what im saying.. hmm..
  7. Maybe you have a ton of background processes running and loading down your processor. Or if you have download scanning enabled in your antivirus it could slow down downloads. Also, you're limited to the max upload speed of wherever you're downloading from.
  8. COULD BE A COUPLE OF THINGS COULD BE THE SPLITTER THAT IS CONNECTED TO THE AMP THAT RUNS TO YOUR ROUTER,COULD BE A VIRUS OR SPYWARE,OR COULD BE THE MODEM YOUR USING OR IF YOUR USING A ROUTER YOUR ROUTER MIGHT BE POWERFUL ENOUGH OR TOO OLD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED
  9. Cable is a shared broadband connection. This means that everyone in your city or area that has a cable connection, is on the same subnet you are. So, the more people that get on line at once, the slower your connection will be.
  10. dslreports.com what is your latency? you can only download as fast as the seeder can upload, the amount of seeders will effect this as well. I use Utorrent, more seeds and it brackets me with higher connection uploaders
  11. the server you are downloading off of is what is slowing you down. they set limits so they dont get bogged down.
