What broadband speed should I get?
I have "Up to 8MB" broadband speed over ADSL but I only ever get about 6.5MB download speed if I do a speed test. If I pay my ISP for "Up to 24MB" speed, will I get somewhere in the high teens actual or will I still only get 6.5MB?

- oh man you have got to get 24 mb wow it is the cooliest... every one is doin it.....
- More then likely you will stay the same. Its all about internet usage in your area, your provider, and what times you are on. Paying for more wont really make a difference.
- depends what youll be doing. If you download a lot of stuff with torrents go for the higher speed. If your just using it for whatever use, and only download here and there. 8 megs is pleanty
- 6.5mb is good for an up to 8mb connection. phone your provider and ask what speed you can expect if you upgrade, they can test the line and give you an accurate figure.
- You will rarely (if ever!) get the advertised speed. The 24MB would give something in the double digits - say around 11-16ish.
- All Internet Service Providers declare that their high speed internet is the fastest. But they offer 8mb connection. They mean 8 megaBITS, not megabytes. a bit is 1/8 of a byte. So if they offer you a 8megabit connection your download speed will be a 1 megabyte connection. You should do some more research on that ISP and test it at dslreports.com and see what others say in your area with the same ISP. And yes, if you do pay for 24mb/sec you should get at least 20mb/sec download speed
- well you might get a higher speed if you upgrade to a 24mbps service. http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php if you goto that site, and you'll need to enter your telephone numberr it will shows whats avaialble eg speed for your local exchange.
- I was with BT and could get 6meg on ADSL (i could get 8meg dead on but it was unstable). I am on an upto 8meg connection too now, only my provider (Be / o2*) goes right up to 24meg, when i was on the upto 24meg package i got about 9meg (as a stable speed, 11-12meg was what i got but it was unstable). So i just downgraded to their 8meg package and im getting 8meg dead on. So if your getting 6.5 meg now, i would reckon your connection speed is around 7.3meg , this could well go up to 11-13meg if your lucky with a upto 24meg provider. But those are just estimates based on your speeds and all that, it might not be the case, but you should see an increase.
